My active tags are a lot less than the number of added tags.

On the bottom right on the TOP Server status bar I see a total number of tags and active number of tags.  Why is the active number so much smaller than the total number?

When making an OPC Connection to the Server, the OPC Client can add tags without making them active.  The OPC Client can turn the polling on and off for these tags by setting the tags active or inactive.

Wonderware Application Server 3.1 now supports this feature and by default only activates the tags on demand (see Galaxy\Configure\Communications Management).  The options are Active, ActiveOnDemand, or ActiveAll. 

  • Active will make tags Active the first time they are requested.
  • ActiveOnDemand will make only the tags currently needed for active Objects or logging Active.
  • ActiveAll will make all tags for the I/O driver (OPC Server) active.

Consult your OPC Client documentation or vendor about how to adjust these types of settings for your particular OPC Client software if they are supported.
