Issues with DNS Host Name Resolution and TOP Server Device ID formatting

For TOP Server device drivers that support DNS Host Name Resolution, it is important to make sure the Device ID is correct when configuring your device in TOP Server.

Drivers that currently support DNS Host Name Resolution:

  • Bristol/IP (BSAP over Ethernet)
  • CODESYS
  • ControlLogix Ethernet
  • DNP Ethernet
  • Fisher ROC Ethernet
  • Fisher ROC Plus Ethernet
  • IEC 60870-5-104 Ethernet Master
  • Micro800 Ethernet
  • Modbus TCP/Ethernet
  • MT Connect
  • Omron NJ Ethernet
  • Siemens TCP/Ethernet
  • SNMP Suite (SNMP & Ping Drivers)

With DNS Naming Support, the Device ID fields for supporting drivers are less restrictive in what is permitted in the Device ID field, which means the potential for syntax errors is greater.

For example, the formatting used in the Modbus Ethernet driver for the Device ID when using an IP Address is <xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx>.y.

The formatting for the Siemens Ethernet driver is simply xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx when using an IP Address.  Since the Siemens Ethernet driver supports DNS Host Resolution, it would accept the format <xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx>.y because it treats it as a DNS Host Name.  However, that format would not allow successful communication with your S7 controller.

For full details on Device ID formatting for a specific driver, please consult the specific driver help file under "Device Setup" to confirm your Device ID format is correct.
