My TOP Server 5 Installation fails

I get the error: "TOP Server 5 Setup wizard ended prematurely" or something like this when I try to install the TOP Server.

If you are upgrading version 5.7 or earlier, you may get an error detecting that server_admin.exe is running you will need to close this first before running the install.

TOP Server installs on Windows 2000 (Version 5.8 and before) /XP/2003/Vista/2008/2008 R2/Windows 7. Under most circumstances this procedure occurs without a problem. There are those rare occasions where something goes wrong. Here are the top reasons:

  1. The user gets a write error or access violation while attempting to install the server. This occurs when the user attempts to install the server while logged-in without Administrator rights. TOP Server must install components to the window's system directory, to do this the install program must have Administrator rights on the PC.
  2. The install cannot update an existing installation while TOP Server is running. TOP Server must be shut down in order to install a new version of new driver. This includes when the OPC server is running as a Windows service.
  3. TOP Server cannot execute after install due to a bad or missing DLL. This can occur if the user's system had other software running during the installation procedure or s/he had an anti-virus package running that either prevents system files from being changed or replaces them after the TOP Server installation completes. In any case all applications must be stopped on the PC before TOP Server can be installed.
  4. TOP Server cannot install due to the hard disk space required. TOP Server can require up to 100 megs of available hard disk space to install depending on user options.
  5. After installation and upon first run TOP Server reports a failure to determine machine ID. We have seen this occur when the user is running applications like PCAnywhere in the background. Have the user stop all programs and re-run the TOP Server installation. This has taken care of the issue in every case.
  6. The user reports that the driver they bought does not appear to be installed. This occurs due to the user not actually selecting the desired driver from the driver list during the install. Instruct the user to re-run the setup and ensure that they select the desired driver and that the driver is clearly marked with a check to indicate that is will be installed.

If none the above solve the problem,

  1. Fully uninstall the TOP Server, if this fails email support@softwaretoolbox.com with the error from the uninstall
  2. Rename the new install "setup.exe"
  3. Right Click on the setup.exe and choose run as Administrator
