Multihoming Network Adapters for Optimized BACnet Communications: Best Practices

I am following the recommended optimization steps for the TOP Server BACnet driver and multihoming my network card. I added several Aliases to the NIC, but none of the channels I created in the TOP Server are able to communicate via these Aliases - Am I doing something wrong?

With some systems, the number of Aliases is limited by the NIC Drivers or the Operating System - if this limit has been exceeded the number of Aliased IP addresses should be reduced.

We recommend taking the following steps when adding Aliases (multihoming) to your Network Card:

  1. Add a new Alias to your existing Network Card (Please see our answer on how to multihome your network adapter here)
  2. Use a Command Prompt to Ping this new IP Address to verify that it is recognized as an interface (Ideally this could be confirmed from another computer on the same network)
  3. Re-initialize the TOP Server Runtime Service and then specify the new Alias as the Network Adapter for the channel
  4. Copy a working device from an existing channel to the new channel, and confirm that it is still working - take care here that the device that is copied should be accessible using the network adapter.

Repeat the steps above for each alias that is added. Checking each new Interface Alias that is added will make sure that the Network Adapter is able to handle the new Alias.
