Recommendations when using a public mail server with OmniServer Email Plug-in/Wedge

Starting with OmniServer Professional Edition V3.2.0.11, the Email Plug-in (Wedge) configuration now supports SSL and TLS encryption, including a configurable port. This makes makes it technically possible to use a public mail server such as Google or Yahoo for sending your email notifications from the OmniServer Email Plug-in / Wedge.
There are certain security settings in your email account settings that are required for this to work, though. This has been tested explicitly with Google and Yahoo but is not necessarily limited to those services. Check with your mail provider regarding allowing 3rd party applications to use their mail server for sending outgoing email messages for details on whether they support this and what settings may be required.
