What can cause a Broken TOP Server License?

The TOP Server licensing is based on a trust relationship between the licensing service, and the machine/hardware profile of the computer on which the license is running. If this trust relationship is broken (i.e. the licensing service no longer trusts that it is running on the same machine where the license was originally activated) the TOP Server License Utility will show that the license status is Broken with a sub status explaining why. See here for more details on license statuses: TOP Server License Statuses

Any of the following could alter the trusted relationship between the machine and license

  • Hardware changes
    • Network Interface Card
    • System disk alteration
    • Memory
  • Software Changes
  • Power Outage induced reboot
    • NIC is altered
    • Software failure results in alternate NIC upon startup
    • Hardware failure results in alternate NIC upon startup
    • RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) implementation
    • HDD is altered
  • Operating System
    • Restored to previous date
    • Restored to image

Resolution

  • If any of the above actions are going to be performed that could change the trusted profile of the license, the license should first be transferred off the machine and then reactivated after the change to prevent breaking the license.
  • To recover from a license with a status of Broken Binding:
License Recreations are a benefit included in an active Support and Maintenance Agreement. To receive a quote to renew your Support Agreement, please submit a Re-Registration Request for Non-Support Holders
    • Or complete the Re-Registration Form. Our team will receive the request and be able to recreate the license for you if you are on an active Support and Maintenance Agreement.
