Cogent DataHub: Corrupted Configuration files causing OPC Group Creation to Fail (0x800706BA)

When moving configuration files from either old installations of DataHub, or from a different machine, we always suggest zipping these files first. Failure to do this is one example of how DataHub configuration files may become corrupted. Corrupted configuration files can affect the DataHub functionality. In particular, we have witnessed these issues be disguised as a DCOM error.
When DataHub is acting as an OPC DA server, a client may connect normally with no issue. However, an attempt to add a group will result in the error code 0x800706BA. This code typically represents "The RPC Server is not available" which would indicate one of the following issues:
  • The OPC Server is not running
  • The RPC Service is not running
  • DCOM Configuration error
  • Callback is being blocked
While the above issues are most commonly related to this error, corrupted configuration files in the DataHub application data directory may lead to these same symptoms. If all other issues have been cleared away, fully wiping the configuration directory will force DataHub to generate new uncorrupted configuration files.

Follow the steps below to generate new configuration files in your DataHub directory:
  1. Access the Cogent DataHub configuration files: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Cogent DataHub
  2. Save and Zip the entire folder directory as a backup
  3. Delete all contents of this folder - files may be restored from the backup one at a time to determine which file(s) was corrupted
