OPC Data Logger V4 Upgrade Best Practices
Existing Users must read the information below before running the V4 installer, re-licensing with new upgrades are required for any V3 license. Before you upgrade please review the best practices below to ensure a smooth upgrade process.
The first step is to confirm that you are on a supported operating system, and that you consider other connected applications, and always follow your company's change management policies and practices. If you have a complex installation, consider testing on another machine before upgrading a production system. If you need a temporary license to facilitate that testing please submit a support ticket.
Step 1: Ensure you have an eligible license for OPC Data Logger V4
- V4 requires any existing OPC Data Logger to be upgraded, this is provided free-of-charge to current Support & Maintenance holders. Existing licenses not on support will need to reinstate their Support agreement to upgrade.
- Users on support can request a free upgrade. If you are unsure if your license is on support or would like to check on the upgrade pricing please contact us.
Step 2: Backup your configuration and install the new version
We are now ready to install the new version. If you do not have the installer you can download the latest version.
Next we can back up the configuration project
- Open the OPC Data Logger Options from the Tools tab in the configuration. Review and note the current Project Default Save Location under File Settings.
- Browse to the Project file location in your computer. Make a copy of the .datalogger & .datalogger.options files as a backup. These files are not changed during the upgrade process, however, we always suggest creating backups during upgrades. You can also save the current loaded project from File > Save as to an easy accessible location.
Now that we have a backup, you need to Exit the OPC Data Logger configuration application and Stop the OPC Data Logger service.
Run the installer. It will prompt you that you have a version already installed and ask if you would like upgrade to V4. If upgrading an existing licensed version, the installer will indicate the support is expired. Please ensure you have already confirmed your license upgrade procedures with our team. Selecting "No" at this stage will revert back any changes. Continue with the installation process.
Once finished you can run the OPC Data Logger configuration and browse to your Project Files from the File menu. The expectation is everything is fine and the backup configuration folder is not needed. If this is not the case, please browse and open the created copy of your .datalogger file created in Step 2 above.
Of course if you have any unexpected behavior after upgrading please contact our support team.
