DataHub V11 Upgrade Best Practices

Before you upgrade please review the best practices below to ensure a smooth upgrade process.

Before you start work, be sure you confirm that you are on a supported operating system, and that you consider other connected applications, and always follow your company's change management policies and practices. If you have a complex installation, consider testing on another machine before upgrading a production system. If you need a temporary license to facilitate that testing, please contact us.

Step 1: Make sure you have a license for version 11

DataHub licenses include a version number as part of the product code. It should have a “v11” in the license number if it works with version 11. Users on support can request a free upgrade.  If you are unsure if your license is on support or would like to check on the upgrade pricing please contact us.

Step 2: Backup your configuration and install the new version

We are now ready to install the new version.  If you do not have the installer you can download the latest version.
Next we can backup the configuration folder.
  1. Open the DataHub Service Manager
  2. Copy the path for the Configuration Folder.  The default config path is C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Cogent DataHub
  3. Open Windows Explorer and paste in this path.
  4. Make a copy of the entire “Cogent DataHub” folder and save it to a convenient location.  This contains all the configuration files and the license and will act as the backup configuration folder.
Now that we have a backup you need to Exit the DataHub application or Stop the DataHub service.
Run the installer.  It will prompt you that you have a version already installed and ask if you would like to uninstall.  Click Yes and it will remove the old version and install the latest version.
Once finished you can run the DataHub and check your configuration.  The expectation is everything is fine and the backup configuration folder is not needed.  If the configuration does not match what was there before the upgrade, replace the “Cogent Datahub” folder that is currently at the path used in Step 2 above with the backup configuration folder. If you have remote clients connecting to this Cogent DataHub instance, proceed to Step 3 as additional security changes may be required to ensure proper functionality.

Step 3: Update Security Settings to Allow Remote Connectivity

DataHub V11 introduced a new, robust connection and security model designed to enhance protection for remote connectivity. These enhancements make DataHub more secure out of the box, but they require additional configuration when upgrading from earlier versions. For detailed guidance on updating your security settings and addressing potential connectivity issues, please refer to the FAQ: Upgrading to DataHub V11 - Security Considerations for Tunneling and other Remote Connections
Of course, if you have any unexpected behavior or questions after upgrading, please contact our support team.
