How to Remove a TOP Server License
How do I remove a TOP Server license from a computer?
If you need to remove an existing TOP Server software license from a computer, you can use the Transfer function in the TOP Server License Utility. This allows you to remove the license from the local machine without uninstalling TOP Server.
Steps to Remove a License (TOP Server V6 and V7)
Step 1: Open the TOP Server License Utility from the Windows Start menu or by searching for "License Utility".
Step 2: Select the software license you want to remove.
Step 3: Click the Transfer button.
Step 4: Review the selected licenses and click Save to File to generate the transfer request file.
Step 5: Once the transfer request file has been successfully generated, the selected license will be removed from the local machine.
Important: If your goal is simply to remove the license from the computer and you do not intend to reuse it, you can delete the generated transfer request file after confirming that the license was successfully removed. This is useful for expired temporary licenses, or broken licenses that can not recovered.
However, deleting the transfer request file does not return the license to Software Toolbox or make the Activation ID available for reuse. If you intend to transfer or reactivate the license on another computer, retain the file and complete the transfer through the Software Toolbox Activation Center.
For detailed transfer instructions, see our TOP Server V6 & V7 License Transfer Guide.
What if the license transfer fails with a Trusted Storage error?
In some situations, the License Utility may fail to generate the transfer request file and display an error similar to:
Failed to generate request [Trusted storage load failed]
This error indicates that the underlying licensing service can no longer validate its trusted storage. This may occur following hardware changes, virtual machine modifications, system restores, or changes to the underlying licensing files.
If the standard transfer process fails, the local Trusted Storage may need to be reset to clear the licensing information.
We have an existing FAQ that provides instructions for resolving this error:
How to Clear TOP Server Trusted Storage: Failed to Generate Request [Trusted Storage Load Failed]
Warning: Resetting Trusted Storage removes all software licenses stored in the affected licensing environment, not just the license you originally intended to remove. Before proceeding, record all Activation IDs and confirm whether any licenses need to remain operational or be reactivated. Follow the linked recovery instructions carefully.
Does removing a license uninstall TOP Server?
No. Removing a software license does not uninstall TOP Server or delete its project configuration. The software will remain installed, but features requiring the removed license will no longer be permanently licensed.
If you also need to uninstall TOP Server, see our TOP Server Uninstallation Guide.
